Passenger Vehicle Applications

The cleanliness of your engine fluid is crucial to the trouble-free and cost-effective operation of your engine system. Engine components are costly and need special consideration when this fluid is selected and subsequently filtered.
As soon as you start your engine, the deterioration process of your oil begins. As the engine runs, dirt, wear metal particles, fuel, soot, and water start to weaken your oils lubrication and protection properties. These harmful elements can be eliminated by an oil drain, but once the oil is replaced, the deterioration process just starts over again.
Regular oil drains and filter changes are required to protect our engines and hydraulic systems. The Kleenoil Filtration System, however, allows us to extend the time between oil drains as well as to reduce the adverse effects of harmful particles in the engine.
Normal full-flow filters on your car or truck have approximately 85 to 120 L of oil passing through the filter each minute. As a result, the fluid passes through so quickly that it cannot be finely filtered, nor can water be removed. While the film of oil between moving parts in an engine is generally about 3 micron, regular oil filters only filter down to between 15 and 40 micron.
The Kleenoil Filtration System, however, is a bypass filter that passes only a small portion of the total oil flow a very dense filtering medium at about 2.5 L per minute. At this speed, it is possible to remove particles down to 1 micron and to totally remove water, greatly decreasing engine wear and prolonging oil life.
Key Benefits to Passenger Vehicle Owners
- Extends oil service life. You now only need to change your oil once a year.
- Keeps oil cleaner than when it is brand new, out of the bottle! Third party oil analysis has proven that the Kleenoil Filtration System can reduce the particle counts of existing oil to a level better than brand new oil … all the time!
- Virtually eliminates engine wear.
- Removes 99.95% of all water from your oil.
- Removes all wear particles down to 1 micron in size.
- Reduces time needed for service: those 30 minute oil changes become 5 minute filter cartridge changes.
- Does not remove the additive package components from the oil.
Recommendations for Use
The Kleenoil Filtration System will be a valuable addition for a passenger vehicle if:
- You put a large amount of mileage on your car or truck annually.
- You plan on keeping your vehicle for more than four years.
- You want the ultimate in protection for your vehicle and you want to maximize the life of the engine.
For people looking to install the Kleenoil Filtration System on passenger vehicles with smaller oil systems, there should be a few considerations:
- Do you still plan on changing your oil every 5 000 to 16 000 km? If you stick to that oil change frequency, the Kleenoil Filtration System will be an expensive up-front expenditure that won’t reap the full benefits of the system.
- Are you leasing or buying your vehicle? If you are leasing it and will only have the car or truck for three years or less, then the Kleenoil Filtration System is probably not going to pay for itself.
- Do you have enough space in your engine compartment to mount the Kleenoil Filtration System? You need a space roughly 5 inches in diameter and 8 inches in height in the engine compartment to properly mount the unit. Some engine compartments are simply too small and will not have the necessary space.

Trucking Fleet Applications

Bypass oil filtration technology was originally introduced to the trucking industry in the 1930’s. It was the exclusive means for filtering engine oil from the early 1930’s until the early 1960’s. At that time, engine manufactures moved away from bypass filtration when full flow filtration became vogue. People saw full flow as having the ability to filter all the oil at once as opposed to the 10% at a time that bypass filtration does even though full flow filters don’t have the ability to filter out anything but the largest particles out of the oil. Factory full flow oil filters are not even designed to purify the oil down to a single digit micron level but mainly to filter all the oil at a high rate before it gets to the engine. Since full flow filters filter the oil at such a high flow rate, it is unable to trap the microscopic particles that enter the oil which can damage your motor. During the last 10 years bypass filtration interest has been sparked and positioned mainly as a way for fleets to extend engine oil life and oil drain intervals. People now realize you can have the best of both worlds by running bypass filtration alongside your full flow filter. This allows the full flow filter to catch the large particles and the Kleenoil Bypass Filtration System to catch particles down to 1-micron in size, all the water and acid, as well as the soot that will inevitably end up in diesel engine oil.
Kleenoil Bypass Filtration Systems can help prevent a buildup of contaminants that can score bearings, rings and cylinder walls of the engines in your truck fleet. Contamination also can contribute to an increase in viscosity and gum deposits on rings and valves. Because filtration is necessary for effective engine protection, it is important to make sure you have the best available system in good working order. According to Fleet Equipment Magazine, 60 percent of the potential causes of wear and failure can be eliminated by well-designed and properly applied filtration systems.
Kleenoil Bypass Filtration Systems are especially beneficial on the newer EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) diesel engines as they will run hotter and produce more soot and acids than previous models of diesel engines. The very nature of how these newer EGR engines function makes Kleenoil Bypass Filtration a must have on these newer trucks! Most engine builders have decided that cooled EGR is the most effective way to reduce combustion temperatures. Small amounts of exhaust gas will be piped to the chambers to displace oxygen; less oxygen means cooler combustion. Before going to the cylinders, some of the exhaust gas heat will be absorbed by the engine’s coolant, thus the term “cooled EGR.” Federal rules now require diesel engines to produce about 50% less nitrous oxide, or NOx, than current diesels thus the reason for the newer EGR diesel motors. More heat, soot and acid will form during combustion in most of these new EGR diesels, say engineers. With greater amounts of soot and acid making its way into the engine oil, the Kleenoil Bypass Filter is no longer considered an optional item. It is a must have if you want to reduce operational costs and maximize the life of these expensive engines!

Recommendations for Use
Kleenoil Bypass Filtration can be a valuable addition for a trucking fleet if:
- You put a large amount of kilometers on your truck annually.
- You currently change your oil every 16,000 to 40,000 km and would be interested in saving yourself significant money by extending your oil drain interval schedule. Up to a 90% savings can be realized in some cases.
- You would like to put off the 800,000 km engine overhaul.
- You want to minimize downtime and maximize your profits.
- You simply want the ultimate in protection for your truck and want to maximize the life of the engine.
Installation and Maintenance Schedule for Trucking Fleets with Kleenoil Systems
Take an initial oil analysis on your existing oil in your truck when your normal oil change interval is up PRIOR to installing the Kleenoil System. This will give you a baseline reading so you have something to compare against once you have your Kleenoil Bypass Filtration System installed. Installation of the Kleenoil Bypass Filtration System on big rig trucks is typically on the frame of the engine compartment OR on the frame behind or slightly in front of the gas tank on the frame on the passenger side of the truck (see image above for example). Install the Kleenoil unit on the truck along with a fresh oil change and full flow filter change, change the Kleenoil bypass filter every 24,000 km and top off with oil. Take periodic oil analysis readings to get an accurate gauge on the oils current conditions and let it be the barometer on when to finally change the oil and full flow filter. The oil will likely come back good for at least 120,000 to 160,000 km. Most people see 160,000 km or more on the same oil. Let the oil analysis be your gauge on when to change the oil. If your TAN/TBN numbers still look good and the viscosity and particle levels are staying within spec, you can indefinitely keep the same oil in your truck.

Construction Applications

In the construction industry, equipment downtime = lost money! If you have to pull your equipment out of service due to overdue oil changes, if you have costly engine overhauls due to wear from operating in extreme conditions and environments, or if you simply cannot afford to have any equipment downtime, then the Kleenoil Filtration System is the solution to keeping your equipment up and running.
Construction equipment is used in the harshest, dirtiest, and most rugged environments. Surprisingly, construction equipment is equipped with just ordinary full-flow filters which cannot remove the greater amounts of solid contaminants that enter through the air intake or are introduced into hydraulic systems. Often, as a practical solution, maintenance managers will change oil and filters earlier and more often to reduce engine wear. This, of course, increases oil change costs and when you are dealing with a large fleet of equipment, these cost increases can rapidly get into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Key Benefits of the Kleenoil Filtration System for Construction Applications
- Extends oil drain intervals.
- Reduces new oil purchase.
- Improves oil viscosity.

Oil Field Applications

Oil change change costs for oil rigs can vary depending on whether the rig is land or water based. Performing an oil change is extremely expensive in either environment, but when the change is done on an ocean-based rig, extreme care has to be exercised. Careful planning is necessary to ensure the old, used oil is safely taken off the rig and sent back to land. On the water-based rigs, the two main concerns are water pollution and equipment downtime. Oil drilling companies cannot afford to have drilling equipment down for even a few minutes as lost drilling time means lost money. Also, operating in these extreme conditions and environments can lead to costly engine overhauls due to engine wear caused by contaminated oil. The Kleenoil Filtration System, however, is the answer you are looking for to keep you equipment up and running.

- You need to reduce downtime as much as possible.
- You simply want the ultimate in protection for your equipment and you want to maximize the life of the engines, hydraulic systems, or transmissions on your drilling equipment.

Marina Applications

Marine engines and equipment operate in the most severe environments you can imagine. In these environments, engines and hydraulic systems must operate efficiently with little to no downtime. On land, an oil change is a simple affair, but on water, there is always the potential for an oil spill, not mention the problem of disposing the used motor or hydraulic oil and the extreme costs associated with these types of changes. On larger marine engines, these oil changes can cost several thousands of dollars and require much downtime – often in industries where there can be no downtime.
Because marine engines often run for nearly 24 hours a day and under extreme loads, oil changes are typically required oil changes at shorter intervals. However, because the Kleenoil Filtration System virtually eliminates wear particles and water from your oil, you can extend drain intervals and still keep your engine oil in a virtually new condition.

Kleenoil Filtration Installation Instructions
Introduction
The Kleenoil Filtration System is installed in a bypass loop. The oil is finely recycled and any water removed as the equipment operates. As a result, the oil is maintained in a clean, usable condition, dramatically extending any oil drain interval. The following procedures should be followed during installation of a Kleenoil Filtration System to any engine lubricating system or hydraulic oil circuit.
The Kleenoil Filtration System
The unit is supplied complete with the following items unless otherwise requested:
- Cast aluminum casing, lid, lid sealing ring, lid bolts, nuts, and washers. Supporting bracket complete with four bolts, washers, and two nuts.
- Cartridge already installed in the unit ready for use.
- Length of high pressure, internally braided 3/16th Gates hose. Four assorted hose connectors.
Installation Procedure
The Kleenoil Filtration System can be installed to virtually any engine or hydraulic system simply by following the six steps outlined below:
- Select a convenient place for locating the unit on the equipment.
- Rigidly install the holding bracket and bolt the unit onto the holding bracket, preferably in a vertical position.
- Select the appropriate oil pressure supply point on the engine or the hydraulic system. Remove the existing plug, and replace it with a fitting terminating with a number 4 JIC male.
- Select the appropriate oil return point on the engine or hydraulic system. Remove the existing plug, and replace it with a fitting terminating a number 4 JIC male.
- Measure and cut the lengths of hose required for both the supply and the return lines. Install the four appropriate hose end connectors to the hoses (two for each hose). Connect each hose from the Kleenoil Filtration System to the engine or hydraulic system.
- Secure and protect the hoses using plastic hose clips.
Testing Procedure
- Run the system for 15 to 20 minutes or until the oil is warm.
- Check for leaks at connection points and tighten up as necessary.
- Place hand carefully on top of the unit. If the unit is warm, it is working satisfactorily.
- If the unit is cold, the oil is not flowing as it should. Switch off the oil flow and check the connections are correct, then try again.
Notes
- Install the Kleenoil Filtration System above the static level of the oil.
- Install the unit vertically, allowing some space for removal of the cartridge.
- For engines: Oil pressure points are located along the oil gallery, oil pressure light, and around the OEM filter housing. Oil return points are located on the pan, the dipstick connection access, or on any return oil flow lines.
- For hydraulics: Do not install the Kleenoil Filtration System on a pressure line without some form of reduction valve package. The unit normally operates around 30 to 80 psi, and damage to the filter housing may occur at pressures exceeding 120 psi. First, check for cooler systems or case drains. These will allow the Kleenoil Filtration System to be installed into the oil flow without the use of reducing valve packages. Check with your operating manual if in doubt.
